Our solution: Give them as much written content as you can so that they can learn about your business on their own.  Your web site, your company policies, your brochures, products and company manuals all speak volumes.  Forward them important emails and fax or mail hand written notes.  It doesn't have to be pretty.  It just needs to be informative.  Put the pressure on them come back to you with questions, instead of you spending a lot of time with up-front explanations.

Excuse #5:  You just can risk it.

Trust is one of the biggest obstacles in the virtual business relationship.  After all, you're never going to meet this person.  You can't see what their work area looks like.  They're not going to be available to you like a traditional employee would.  You're probably worried about legalities, technology, responsibility, quality ... and a host of other things.

Our solution: Design a schedule for working with your team so you know exactly when and how you can reach them.  Rest assured that they are under contract to not only provide the best quality of work possible in the least amount of time--but to maintain high standards of confidentiality and protect your interests at all times.

Excuse #6: You don't want to invest a lot into technology--or anything else!

Don't.  Remember, one of the biggest benefits to hiring a virtual team is that they have their own software and equipment.  And, of course, they take care of their own benefits, so you don't have to worry about the typical employees woes.  Simple things like setting up additional email accounts or having phone lines forwarded to them will probably cost you nothing.

Excuse #7:  You actually enjoy the dirty work!

Well, that's nice--but its not productive.  If you want your business to grow you need to produce more--a lot more.  That means having more people working as productively as possible--simultaneously.  They're relying on you to be the leader, spread your company message, and capitalize on opportunities.  Remember why you started your company in the first place!

Our solution: By continually brainstorming with team members about back-end mechanics, you can still feel like an integral part of the dirty work.  You'll learn to be satisfied in a purely leadership role, overseeing team members who are the absolute best at the dirty work they do.

Excuse #8: You're afraid of losing control or authority.

That's impossible--honestly.  It's YOUR business!  You control the level of responsibility within the team--even if you appoint a Team Leader to delegate tasks for you.  If you can see yourself in a leadership role, that will never happen.

Our solution: We're not here to "take over." We're here to be patient as rapport builds within the team and work at a level you are comfortable with while respecting your wishes.  Unless there is a drastic communication breakdown, your team members will always look to you for guidance and decision making.  It's even in their contract!  And should they ever get confused about their level of responsibility, they are instructed to ask you to clarify immediately.

Excuse #9: You don't want to manage a whole team.

 

The idea of delegating to more than one team member--especially virtual ones--can seem daunting at first.  It seems like a lot to set up, juggle, and streamline.

Excuse #9: You think you can hire a VA from India or off a job board for a lot less.

 

Ah, we knew this one was coming.  Go ahead. Try it.  We know you don't want to run up your phone bill to India, though you could communicate through the internet ... but do you really want to do that in the wee hours of the morning if you can avoid it?  It's a gamble and you know it.  It won't work for you if you want to build a real team that will make you profitable in the long run.

 

And, do you really think that someone who charges less than $10/hour has a solid head for business?  Their overhead is going to cost them more than that!  Is that someone that you think you can invest in to grow with your company over time?  In VERY RARE cases some out there actually charge so little because they aren't profit-driven.  They just like doing what they do--but good luck finding those people.  In the past ten years, I've only run into one such Virtual Assistant.

 

And here's one last trap that many entrepreneurs fall into: they hire a "VA" for $10/hour but it takes them 5 hours to do a project that a Virtual Dynamo could do in 1 hour at a rate of say, $35 per hour.  Do that and you've just wasted more money, got poorer quality work, and had to wait for a longer turn-around time.
